| Posted by: Administrator Karen | Rhonda, do you know if there's an Independent Living Center near you? They might have caregivers information that they would share with you. Another place to find caregivers is through a disabled student center at a University. Is there any way to get a payment for caregivers covered by Medicaid or Medicare? It's very difficult to find quality people -- this I know. I've probably gone through 50 people during my lifetime already. Let me know if I can help you with any research in this area, and thanks so much for posting here!

| Posted by: Rhonda | Personal Care Attendents are a new experience for me as of January, due to my Dad passed away last November and he did everything for me. I have found it extremely difficult to find reliable people nin this field. I have had the agency I used call 1/2 hour before the Attendent's supposed to be here and advise the person won't be coming and I need to find someone else. This happened many times with this particular agency which I no longer use, but it has also happened with Saint Mary's PAS program. Now I am trying a 3rd agency and they have not been able to match anyone up with me yet. The one they sent trained for 2 days and then said it was too difficult. So I have one person getting me up in the mornings and putting me in bed right now, except when my cousin can put me in bed one day a week beside when he trains the new people. I also can't believe the cost per hour these agencies charge. I have had issues with the Care Givers when putting on my compression hose 30-40 strength so they are tight. Well my legs and feet are very sensitive and when I remind some of the ones I had that they push too hard the due it more. Since January I have had 10-12 different Care Givers.

| Posted by: Administrator Karen | Throughout my independent life, I have had some less than desirable experiences with personal caregivers. Not only is the control issue a constant (where they don't ask you what you want to eat, how you would like to wear your hair, how your teeth should be brushed, etc.) but unfortunately there are also little forms of punishment that can be inflicted upon a vulnerable person. Some of these punishments that I've experienced include being given a dinner that is difficult to eat, lack of care for a pet, allowing soap to get in my eyes during a shower, etc.. What are your thoughts on this and how do you deal with caregivers who have their own agendas?

| Posted by: Nancy | I have late onset Acid Maltice Deffiency. I must use a non invasive vent machine at night or my CO2 will go up. About breathing when I was healthy, I did Yoga. You learn a lot about breathing through Yoga, but cant do that now. Oddly enough singing is a great breathing excercise. I still do my deep breathing I learned in Yoga as best I can. Karen, what a beautiful lady you are and a great example for us all to follow.

| Posted by: Angie Wright | For me, before going to sleep and when I first wake up, I do ten slow, deep inhales and exhales. I also try and do one deep breath every couple of hours. This was something I was told to do as a young child by my GP and enforced by my parents. My parents said it would keep The Boogey Man away! LOL! It helped as a child and now, as an adult, it's just a habit.
